Uttarkashi, means the Kashi of the north. It is a holy town of Uttarakhand, India. Uttarkashi is situated at an altitude of 1158 meters and about 169 km away from Rishikesh. Uttarkshi is a district in the Uttarakhand state of India. It is situated on the banks of river Bhagirathi, surrounded by the rivers Varuna and Assi. This is a town full of temples, historical monuments,’ashrams’ and ‘dharamasalas’.
It is a Shiva town. Here Shiva is the presiding deity and is worshiped morning, noon and night all over the day in the ancient temple of Lord Vishwanath. Among other temple in the town includes Parashuram, Kali and that of the Ekadash Rudra, built by the former Maharaja of Jaipur. Kuteti Devi temple is situated on the Hari Parbat, on the banks of the Bhagirathi; Kuteti devi is the main goddess of Kot Gram Khai in Uttarkashi. Uttarkashi comes in the path of important pilgrimage, Gangotri.
Mythology of Uttarkashi
Many Hindus believe that Uttarkashi was revered as a sacred place earlier and was also the meditational grounds of several sages and hermits who found solace here. It has been cited in the epic Mahabharata, that a great sage by the name of Jada Bharatha performed a prolonged penance here and in the ancient time’s Vedic language was highly used here in spoken and written forms.
Places to Visit in Uttarkashi
Davara Bugyal– The place is exactly 28 km far from Uttarkashi, approximately located 3048 meters above the sea level. You can see the best sight scenery of Himalayas over here. Also a small lake over there, Highlight of Bugyal is the trekking route and a beautiful small lake namely Barnala tal. Usually in winter season, you can experience the best snow falls over here. Harsli and Gangotri Temple is the two tourist spot near to Dayara Bugyal.
Gangnani– Gangnani is approximately 39 km far from Uttarkashi. The place lies on the way to Gangotri. You can see a beautiful temple in the valley, the temple itself is dedicated to Sage Parashar. A small hot water stream located near to this temple namely Rishikund, visitors bath in this hot water spring.
Harsil– It is approximately 73 km far from Uttarkashi; the place itself is situated in the bank of Bhagirathi River at an approximate elevation of 2620 meter above the sea level. More than other areas in Uttarkashi, the temperature maintain good and comfortable in almost all seasons. The place Harsil is located on the way to Gangotri. Apples that are cultivated from Harsil are more famous due to its authentic delicious taste. The enchanting spot on the way to Gangotri is noted for its natural beauty and delicious apples.
Sat Tal– Sat Tal is comes because of the seven lakes presence in this area. This mind blowing location is situated just above Dharali, 2 km far away from Harsil.
Maneri– The place Maneri is just 13 km far from Uttarkashi, the place lies on Gangotri route. A dam that lies across the river Bhagirathi, this is the one best sightseeing spot in Uttarkashi. It is needed to say that, the place Maneri is blessed with Mother Nature.
Gaumukh – Gaumukh is one best important tourist spot of pilgrims, Snow falls (glacier) is the water source of Bhagirathi River. Gaumukh is 18 km far from Uttarkashi. Gangotri is the major tourist favorite spot in Gaumukh.
Kedartal– Kedartal is 18 Km far from Uttarkashi, skyscraper peaks of misty Himalayas is the highlighted tourist spot in this area.
Gangotri– It is a holy place according to Hindu mythology. Gangotri is considered as the source of holy river Ganga. Place “Gangotri” is one of the notable ‘Char Dhams’ of Uttaranchal. Gangotri temple is exactly situated 3048 meter above the sea level and 99 km from Uttarkashi.
Nachiketa Tal– Nachiketa Tal is a beautiful lake is located 29 km far from Chaurangi-Khal. From Chaurangi-Khal you needed to walk 3 km to reach this place.
Best time to visit Uttarkashi
Uttarkashi is a year-round destination owing to its pleasant weather conditions. However, summers and monsoons are recommended for visiting this holy destination as various festivals are celebrated during these seasons.
